Rope access install of three illuminated flexface signs at TJ Morris's Doncaster distribution centre: two 17.2m Home Bargains faces and a 10m oval.
Challenge
Three large-format signs were needed on the north and east elevations of TJ Morris's Doncaster distribution centre: two 17.2m × 4m Home Bargains faces and a 10.09m × 4.85m T.J. Morris oval. The only suitable anchorage was the structural steelwork behind the roof parapet, so roof cladding had to be opened up before any ropes could be rigged, and every face had to be hauled up from below and tensioned by hand at height.
Approach
Once roofers had removed the cladding, the IRATA Level 3 supervisor rigged two fixed lines per technician from the structural steel using EN795 Type B steel strops, with rope protectors over the parapet and exclusion zones around the rigging and below each drop. The four-person rope access team fixed Springflex 196mm aluminium profile to the existing brackets and steel rails with stainless tek screws, then hauled each flexface up on an independent haul line and worked it into the profile end to end with rubber mallets until the face was drum-tight, trimming the excess to the profile edge. Each sign also needed 12v wiring for its internal LED lighting.
Outcome
All three internally illuminated flexface signs were fitted to the existing brackets, tensioned and trimmed entirely from rope access, with no MEWP or scaffold on the elevations, and each stage photographed for the client's signage report.
