What is a mansafe system?

A mansafe system — technically a BS EN 795 Class C horizontal lifeline — is a continuous wire-rope safety system installed across rooftops, facades and walkways to protect operatives working at height. Workers clip on at a single point and traverse the full span without unclipping, with shock-absorbing energy absorbers in the line keeping fall arrest loads within safe limits. 'Mansafe' is the buyer-facing term for the product category; the legacy Mansafe Tractel brand made the name synonymous with horizontal lifelines in the UK. Apex installs and services systems from all leading manufacturers — Latchways (now MSA Safety), Kee Safety (Kee Walk + Kee Line), Capital Safety, Heightec and others — across rooftop maintenance routes, facade access, plant rooms, atria and industrial structures. All installations are BS EN 795 / BS 7883 compliant with full project documentation, load testing and annual recertification.

Single point anchors

Discrete BS EN 795 Class A anchors fixed at engineered positions for fall arrest, restraint and rope-access tie-back. We confirm the substrate and load path on survey, install to manufacturer spec on steel, concrete, masonry or membrane, and proof-load test every anchor at commissioning.

Horizontal lifelines (mansafe)

Continuous BS EN 795 Class C wire-rope lifelines — Latchways, Kee Line, MSA and other approved systems — that let operatives clip on once and traverse a full rooftop or facade run. Designed to the roof geometry and user numbers, installed by manufacturer-trained engineers and recertified annually under BS 7883.

Vertical lifelines

BS EN 353-1 vertical fall-arrest systems on facades, towers, masts and fixed-ladder runs — a cleaner, easier-to-inspect alternative to a traditional ladder cage. Travelling shuttles arrest a fall without restricting the climb, sized to the structure and the height.

Overhead fall protection

Arrest systems that protect from above — for production lines, loading bays, vehicle and tanker tops, and maintenance bays where edge protection or a foot-level lifeline can't reach. Rigid or wire systems suspended from the structure, or freestanding portals, engineered to the work area and access pattern.

Rail systems

Rigid-rail fall-arrest track for overhead and horizontal use — a smooth, hands-free traverse with the highest load tolerance, used where a flexible wire system isn't suitable or several users share a run. Track, trolleys and end-stops sized to span and loading, fixed to the supporting structure.

Fixed guardrails

Permanent, mechanically-fixed edge protection to roof edges, walkways and plant platforms — collective protection that needs no user PPE, training or clip-on discipline. The first-choice solution wherever the structure allows a fixed rail, specified to the roof perimeter and access route.

Freestanding guardrails

Counter-weighted, non-penetrative guardrails for membrane, asphalt and single-ply roofs where penetrations would void the warranty. Ballast-weighted bases give collective edge protection without a single fixing into the structure — ideal for retrofit on warranty-protected roofs.

What is a mansafe system?
A mansafe system is the common buyer-facing name for a horizontal lifeline — a continuous wire-rope safety system installed across rooftops, facades and walkways. Workers clip on at a single point and traverse the full span. The name comes from the legacy Mansafe Tractel brand, which dominated the UK market in the 1990s; today the term covers all BS EN 795 Class C horizontal lifeline systems including Latchways, Kee Line, MSA Safety and others.
How much does mansafe installation cost?
Mansafe installation cost depends on the system length, anchor count, substrate type and the access required during installation. A typical 30-50 metre rooftop run sits in the low-thousands. Do you install Latchways and Kee Safety systems?
Yes — Apex is approved to install systems from all major manufacturers including Latchways (MSA Safety), Kee Safety (Kee Line and Kee Walk), Capital Safety, Heightec and others. We match the system to the building, the user pattern and the budget — not the manufacturer's commission scheme.
How often does a mansafe system need recertifying?
BS 7883 requires fall arrest systems to be inspected and recertified at least annually. Apex provides annual inspection programmes with documented test certificates and any required remedial works carried out in-line, so the system stays in regulatory use without break.
Can a mansafe system be installed without penetrating the roof?
Yes — counter-weighted, non-penetrative freestanding systems are available for membrane, asphalt and single-ply roofs where penetrations would void warranties or risk water ingress. These systems use ballast pans rather than mechanical fixings to anchor the line.
What's the difference between mansafe (Class C) and a single-point anchor (Class A)?
A mansafe Class C horizontal lifeline lets workers traverse a span continuously without unclipping. A Class A single-point anchor is a fixed tie-back at one location — used for rope access tie-in, single-position fall arrest, or where movement isn't required. Many rooftops use both: mansafe along the maintenance route, single-point anchors at plant locations.
