Apex installed aspirating smoke detection pipework across high-level roof voids at Leicester's Curve Theatre using rope access. The work avoided scaffolding costs and maintained the venue's operational schedule.
Challenge
All works had to be completed outside performance hours to avoid disrupting the theatre's live schedule, restricting activity to tight overnight and early-morning windows. The roof structure required technical aid climbing to navigate complex steelwork and suspended lighting grids at height, with rope-access teams moving vertically and horizontally across irregular geometry to reach fire-detection points throughout the auditorium void.
Approach
Apex rope-access technicians traversed the roof structure methodically, installing smoke detection pipework at height using a range of mechanical fixings suited to the theatre's fabric. Work was sequenced to avoid disruption to the venue's programming, with technicians coordinating closely with Complete Detection Systems' engineers on routing and penetration details. All operatives held current IRATA certification, and installations were carried out in accordance with BS 9251 and BS EN 12845 guidance for fixed fire-protection systems.
Outcome
The project was completed to programme, installing a fully compliant fire-detection system across the theatre's complex geometry. All work was carried out while the venue remained operational, minimising disruption to performances and avoiding the need for traditional scaffolding in occupied public areas.
