What is rope access conservation?

Conservation at height combines specialist craft trades — stonemasonry, lime-mortar repointing, leadwork, timber repair and decorative stone — with rope-access delivery, allowing repair to a building's fabric without erecting scaffold. Works are typically scoped from a close-up survey of the elevation, often prompted by a quinquennial inspection, condition survey or reported defect, with method statements and any test patches agreed before repairs begin.

Methods are chosen for compatibility with the existing fabric. Lime-based mortars — hydraulic lime (NHL 2, 3.5 or 5) or non-hydraulic lime putty — are matched to the original mix in binder, aggregate, colour and grading; indent repairs use salvaged or quarry-matched stone set in lime mortar; traditional cast- and milled-lead detailing is used on valleys, parapets and rainwater goods; and appropriate paint systems are used on timber. The governing principle is to repair like-for-like and avoid introducing harder, less permeable materials — such as cement-rich mortars — that trap moisture and accelerate decay of the surrounding stone.

Lime is used in preference to cement because it is softer and more vapour-open than the masonry it joins: it lets the wall breathe, flexes with seasonal movement, and is sacrificial — failing in the joint rather than the stone. Hydraulic limes gain strength through a slow set, so repointing and rebuilding are protected from rain and frost while they cure, and programmes allow for the longer cure times lime requires.

Rope access suits conservation work where scaffold would be disproportionate, intrusive or impractical — towers and spires, elevations over water, live roads or occupied buildings, and discrete high-level defects that do not justify wrapping an entire structure. It keeps the building scaffold-free, removing the cost and programme of scaffold erection and avoiding the fixings and ties that can damage soft stone. It is less suited to full-elevation rebuilds, heavy materials handling, or works needing continuous static platforms, where a hybrid of rope access and traditional access — or scaffold alone — may be more appropriate. The method is selected on the merits of each defect rather than applied universally.

Throughout, works can be recorded photographically before, during and after, supporting the building's records, the health-and-safety file and any future condition surveys.

How we deliver.

High-level inspection & quinquennial support

Many church towers, spires and high parapets sit beyond the safe reach of a quinquennial or condition inspection carried out on foot or by ladder. Rope-access technicians provide close-up visual inspection of this high-level fabric — recording loose masonry, failed pointing, cracked stone and defective lead — and supply a referenced photographic record for the inspecting architect or surveyor to fold into the quinquennial (QI) or condition report. We provide the access and the findings; the appointed inspector retains the report.

Survey, specification & test patches

Close-up survey of the elevation to scope the defects and agree the repair methods. Test patches taken for any new method (cleaning, mortar mix, paint system), with method statements and material specifications issued before works begin.

Stone consolidation & indent repair

Consolidation of weathered, spalling or delaminating stone. Indent repair using salvaged or quarry-matched stone, set in lime mortar. Suitable for sandstone, limestone, granite and individual ashlar units.

Lime mortar repointing

Repointing using lime mortars matched to the original — NHL 2, 3.5 or 5 hydraulic lime, or non-hydraulic lime putty with aggregate matched to the historic mix. Joint geometry returned to the original profile.

Leadwork — valleys, flashings, hoppers

Traditional cast-lead and milled-lead detailing on roofs, parapets and rainwater goods — valleys, flashings, hoppers and coverings, worked to suit the building and the wider repair scope.

Slate roof & ridge repairs

Replacement of slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles, re-bedding and re-pointing of ridge and hip lines, and renewal of the lead flashings around them. Rope access reaches steep, high or awkward roof slopes — church roofs, towers and tall pitched elevations — without scaffold or a roof-edge platform, putting isolated defects right before they let water in.

Timber sash & joinery repair

Splice, scarf and full-section repair of timber sashes, frames and decorative joinery on a building's facades. Appropriate paint systems (including linseed-oil paints and traditional gloss) where required.

How do you scope a conservation repair?
Every job starts with a close-up survey of the elevation — usually on a rope inspection — to identify the defects and agree the repair methods, mortar mixes and any test patches. Method statements and material specifications are issued before works begin, and photographic records can be kept throughout. Where a project has an appointed consultant, works can be coordinated with them.
What lime mortar mix do you use for repointing?
Lime mix is matched to the original mortar — typically a hydraulic lime (NHL 2, 3.5 or 5) or non-hydraulic lime putty, with aggregate matched to the historic mix in colour, grading and source where possible. Test panels and analysis (if needed) confirm the match before bulk works begin.
Do you carry out leadwork?
Yes — we deliver traditional cast-lead and milled-lead detailing on roofs, parapets and rainwater goods: valleys, flashings, hoppers and coverings. Lead detailing is worked to suit the building and the wider repair scope.
Can rope access damage soft stone?
No — rope access avoids the scaffold-fixing damage that's often a concern on older buildings. Apex teams use edge protection at every rope contact, rope protectors against soft stone, and rig from existing structure or temporary anchors removed cleanly on completion. The technique is materially gentler on the building fabric than scaffolding.
Can you work on churches and older buildings?
Yes. Church towers, spires and the elevations of older buildings are well suited to rope access, which avoids scaffold where it is impractical or would risk the fabric. At St Peter's Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, for example, we delivered lime-mortar and masonry repairs to the tower following a quinquennial inspection — entirely on rope, so the church kept running and the grounds stayed clear throughout. Where a project has its own consent or approval process, we support it with method statements, fabric assessments and photographic records, coordinating with the building's owner and any appointed consultant.
Can you carry out repairs while the building stays open?
In most cases, yes. Because rope access needs no scaffold or platforms at ground level, repairs can often proceed while a building remains occupied and in use — rope teams rig from the roof or parapet and manage small exclusion zones below rather than closing the site. It is one of the main reasons churches, visitor attractions and occupied commercial buildings choose rope access over scaffold for high-level repair.
Can you help with our church's quinquennial inspection?
Yes — we support quinquennial inspections by reaching the high-level fabric an inspecting architect or surveyor often can't access safely: towers, spires, parapets and roofs. We deliver a referenced photographic record of defects for them to include in their report. We provide the rope access and inspection findings; the appointed architect or surveyor remains responsible for the quinquennial report itself.
